Creating a Dementia-Friendly Home
Modifying the home for someone with dementia is as easy as ABC: make it Accessible, Bright and Calm with these tips:
Accessible
Foster independence by enhancing accessibility according to the individual’s specific challenges. For instance:
- Label cabinets, the refrigerator, doors, and other areas of the home the person may frequent with pictures or words to describe whatever they may wish to access.
- Place commonly-used items in prominent, easy-to-reach locations.
- Eliminate any tripping hazards, such as throw rugs and extension cords, to ensure clear pathways.
Bright
Lighting is a key component to consider for those with dementia:
- Keep rooms well lit, using natural lighting whenever possible, or the highest wattage bulb recommended for the senior’s light fixtures.
- Ensure lighting is strategically placed to eliminate shadows that may cause the senior distress.
- Keep blinds/curtains closed in the evening to help eliminate disturbing window reflections that could be misinterpreted as an intruder and to help the senior feel secure.
Calm
Designating an area of retreat for the senior to de-stress can be extremely beneficial. Include:
- Several key items or activities that are especially calming to the senior: a favorite photo album to look through, a stuffed animal or pillow to hug, etc.
- Quiet, soothing music.
- A favorite scent that evokes peace, such as vanilla or lavender.
